Nicknamed the Flying Suitcase due to its narrow yet deep fuselage design, the Handley Page Hampden became one of the Royal Air Forces key twin-engine bombers during the opening years of the war.

Originally designed in response to British Air Ministry requirements for a long-range medium bomber, the HP.52 Hampden entered service in 1938 and quickly became a familiar sight with RAF Bomber Command. Later, as heavier bombers entered service, the Hampden transitioned successfully into the torpedo bomber role with RAF Coastal Command.
